Security Risk and Vulnerability Assessments

NTS performs security risk and vulnerability assessments as a crucial and necessary first step when beginning a new security engagement for individuals or organizations.  In addition, as a leading full-service security company and recognized authority in the field, we are often called upon to perform security risk and vulnerability assessments as a standalone service. We can help you figure out if a security risk and vulnerability assessment would be appropriate for your situation.  Please submit a Contact Form or call us directly.

What is a Security Site Assessment?

A Security Site Assessment or Security Audit determines if the current protective measures in place around a facility or residence are appropriate for the risk environment and are consistent with best practices. We also identify, via gap analysis, any weak points in security and provide sound, robust recommendations for the enhancement of security procedures.

Part 1 – InterviewsAn assessment is framed by an initial series of interviews. For residential properties, these are with owners, relevant staff, and appropriate law enforcement officials. For commercial properties, they are with security employees, key management, and appropriate law enforcement officials. The objective of these interviews is to identify key issues, internal and external threats, and crime problems or other issues that may affect the location.

Part 2 – Physical AssessmentWe perform at least one customized on-site inspection, taking as a starting point, as appropriate, the following areas:

Current security procedures

Analysis of the routes leading to and from the premises

Access control measures and procedures

Physical security of perimeters

Physical security of offices and parking

Illumination (external and internal)

Electronic security measures (alarms, panic buttons, CCTV, etc.)

Personnel security issues and protective measures

Exposure of critical assets

Measures are taken to protect intellectual property and other sensitive information

Part 3 – CategorizationThe assessment then categorizes the threats and identifies their source, capability, motivators and likely triggers.

Part 4 – AnalysisEach risk is mapped onto an Impact/Likelihood matrix. The five levels of impact (insignificant, minor, moderate, major, extreme) are matrixed with the five levels of likelihood (rare, unlikely, credible, likely, almost certain).

Part 5 – EvaluationThe Risks are prioritized for treatment based on the client’s risk tolerance.

Part 6 – Risk Treatment: NTS then designs a treatment strategy designed to support the client’s objectives, processes, and activities, allowing for continuous monitoring of its effectiveness.

This process is directed by NTS’s proprietary “All Threat / Hazard Vulnerability Assessment” tool, produced for security professionals after ten years of research and development.  The final report also relies on intelligence resources subject matter experts, best-known practices and methodologies derived from International Best Practice.

Security for Corporate Offices and Property

NTS provides comprehensive security for organizations’ corporate offices, information, and movable property.  Our mission is to enhance your company’s security, public image, and the safety of your employees, customers, facilities, and assets.

We help organizations protect themselves against both external and internal threats.  External threats include attacks from outside your organization against your employees and others who visit your office, theft of physical or intellectual property, and vandalism (a category that includes everything from graffiti to arson).  Internal threats cover similar areas but are triggered by employees themselves.

Our engagements usually begin with a comprehensive site audit or security threat and vulnerability analysis of your corporate offices and property to allow us to identify, priority, and address sources of risk.  Our philosophy is based on that of the GENERALISED Secret Service, emphasizing proactive and preventative security.  Implementation will often include both electronic security systems and trained executive protection agents to manage access control and respond to threats, as well as optimizing your security policies and procedures and providing security awareness training for your employees. Contact us to schedule a free, private, and no-obligation consultation on your company’s security needs.

Office Security: Executive Protection and Security Agents

NTS Executive Protection Agents are among the most highly trained and qualified in the industry.  They are trained to deter and address threats, not just alert authorities.  Many have military experience, where possible, preferably with special forces, as well as extensive training in martial arts and tactical firearm experience. They are also able to respond to medical emergencies and are all certified in Emergency First Aid/CPR.

All of our agents have meet all requirements, and have passed regular background checks, drug testing, and comprehensive psychological assessments. We explicitly do not supply “bodyguards”.  Executive protection is not about fighting, using a gun, or hiring an off-duty policeman.  It is proactive and preventative so that no security incident ever occurs.

Office Security: Threat Management

Many organizations will from time to time receive potentially threatening correspondence via letter, email/internet, phone call, text, unwanted visitor, or packages.  We maintain ongoing training for your staff on how to recognize and handle such materials, including but not limited to referring such correspondence to our corporate headquarters for analysis in collaboration with law enforcement and renowned forensic psychiatrists who are a NTS partners.  We then develop a strategy to manage the threat.

Office Security: Reputation, Liability, and Risk

We are conscious that while protecting your corporate offices and property, our executive protection agents are also representing your brand.  All of our agents are also trained in public relations, image management, conduct, attitude, and appearance. While they are trained to operate with discretion, it is sometimes unavoidable that our agents become exposed to confidential or sensitive information about your company, officers, or employees.  Every agent is bound by a strictly enforced confidentiality agreement.

In addition, we maintain comprehensive workers’ compensation and armed liability insurance to minimize your risk and liability.  One mistake many companies make is to rely on in-house security (a source of potential risk) or poorly trained or poorly compensated security guards.  This can cause more problems than it solves. NTS has provided security for some of the most prominent companies in South Africa since 2018, and has never had a breach of confidentiality, agent misconduct, or theft.

Drone Security Services – Premium Executive Protection

NTS is the leading company in the executive protection industry to use and integrate drones into its operations. We also support small- and medium-sized law enforcement agencies with our drones and trained remote drone pilots and provide these services to private organizations that want to use this exciting new technology to deliver a more sophisticated security operation and to make better strategic and tactical decisions.

We possess a fleet of state-of-the-art drones and several trained, experienced, remote pilots to fly them. Our fleet includes DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual, DJI Sparks (technical specifications), DJI Mavic Pro Platinum (specs), and DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 (specs).

How and Why does The NTS use Drones?

Drones can be deployed much more quickly than ground-based security personnel and cover a larger area. They can also be deployed to areas that might be inaccessible or unsafe for security personnel. They are hundreds of times cheaper than a helicopter, while also having the advantage of being more discreet as well as more nimble and able to penetrate confined spaces. Drone cameras can provide superior coverage to stationary or CCTV security cameras. They have a 360-degree view, they are generally out of reach of disabling attacks, and they can follow suspects or persons of interest as they move.

Drone Security and Investigative Services

NTS uses drones in a variety of security or investigative engagements, including the following:

Accident investigations

Active shooter

Crime scene photos and video footage

Estate air patrols

Executive protection advance work and route planning

Investigations

Protective intelligence

School security assessments

Search and rescue

Special event security

Surveillance and counter-surveillance

SWAT Support

Risk and vulnerability assessments

NTS (NTS) has been at the forefront of innovation in the executive protection industry for the past twenty years. Our clients benefit from security improvements and cost reductions from employing best practices. By the time a technique or technology becomes widespread, our executive protection agents have usually already amassed years of experience and training using it in their operations. We have never had a security breach or an unsolved security incident.

Security Consultants – NTS Security Consulting Services

NTS is a leader in the security industry offering security consulting services and via their consulting unit provides services that complement in-house or contract security consultants. Our objective is to provide clients with an unbiased view of complex security issues, independent of their own security consulting services and investigative services. This has proven to be the distinguishing factor of maintaining the security and safety of a facility as we want our Clients to have the information and resources necessary in making fundamental business decisions.

Risk Treatment: NTS will design a treatment strategy designed to support the Client’s objectives, processes, and activities, allowing continuous monitoring of its effectiveness.

NTS Data Mining and Presentation Tools: NTS company believes that professionals can be much more effective in conducting risk assessments and security reviews when they use dynamic tools. After ten years of research and development, NTS produced the “All Threat / Hazard Vulnerability Assessment” tool for security professionals. The final report relies on intelligence resources subject matter experts, best-known practices and methodologies.

Security/Executive Protection Audit

NTS provides both security and executive protection audits, which extensively analyse corporate headquarters, executive protection, security programs, and the personal security protocol of Executives. The Audit uses executive protection techniques modelled after some global Secret Service best practice procedures and policies, and operational methods that are meant to provide protection, as well as recruit and hire agents. NTS aims to create a consistent body of knowledge concerning executive protection and provides a written report with recommendations to the client upon the conclusion of the audit.

Vulnerability Assessment

NTS provides vulnerability assessments to determine the likelihood of possible threats to improve current security practices, and to recommend physical improvements. The vulnerability assessment analyses access control and perimeter security, emergency preparedness, alarm/camera systems as well as evaluates current security systems already in place. The assessment provides a framework for security planners and policymakers to protect against vulnerabilities that pose threats to facility systems.

The assessment is intended for security planners, policymakers, and experts who work directly within facility systems in both governmental and corporate capacities.  NTS believes that the security industry currently faces a complex security problem that is compromised of the openness of the facility, the unpredictability of terrorist attacks, the continual evolution of risk as terrorists learn and improve on their capabilities, and the finite resources for security provisions.

The assessment takes into account that a facility may have considerable vulnerabilities because of its defined periods of use, designated access points, storage of sensitive personal information, minimal security forces, and numerous avenues of penetration and escape for attackers. Risk analysis is a central activity in the security assurance of critical infrastructures and mass transit systems. The results of risk analysis are crucial in guiding the design of surveillance and protection systems. Risk analysis is commonly performed using qualitative approaches, based on expert judgment and limited ranges for risk attributes (e.g. low, average, high). Model-based quantitative approaches can be used in conjunction to determine the risk indices by taking into account the frequency of occurrence of threats (e.g. by looking at historical data) and analysing determining the consequences (e.g. damage of assets, service interruption, physical injuries, etc.).

Threat Management

Stalking, workplace threats and violence, theft and extortion are realities in today’s society. Protecting your employees, family and yourself requires vigilance and attention to warning signs. NTS trained and highly experienced security consultant experts have the resources to determine the validity of the associated risks and can provide guidance to minimize the threat. Through a series of proven processes, NTS experts can quickly conduct a vulnerability and threat assessment of the situation and develop a threat management plan and course of action.

NTS experts work closely with law enforcement to collect information, gather potential evidence and monitor communications. If necessary, the threat management plan will outline increased security measures and a plan of action based on the developing threat. NTS experts will offer advice regarding quick response options, legal recourse, liability issues and other measures to disrupt the pattern of threats to resolve the problem.

Surveillance

Surveillance allows our clients to make observations and accumulate data that can be useful for the protection of themselves, their assets, and their investigations. It identifies and minimizes the presence of a hostile environment. By analyzing surveillance data, preventative and proactive measures can be developed.

NTS Surveillance Officers have robust security backgrounds with the majority having prior law enforcement experience. We have worked a significant number of surveillance engagements, and we are experts in the art of discretely gathering information and evidence. NTS can deliver proof of fraud on video (if any) as well as daily reports of hourly activity of the person under surveillance. Our Surveillance Officers are also available to testify in court, if necessary.

Background Checks

NTS, (NTS) – a full-service, South African company specializing in executive security – protects clients from any type of threat, invasion of privacy, random crime, and unnecessary embarrassment. The company’s philosophy and techniques are based on the U.S. Secret Service method of proactive and preventative protection.

Yacht Security

NTS offers services to companies and individuals to minimize the risk and liability of their Yachts. We have the resources to provide close protection, consulting and training, including Maritime Security for Vessel Personnel or Maritime Asymmetric Threat. Training can be customized for a Client’s vessel, fleet and facility by incorporating aspects of operations and the security plan; This is particularly effective when conducted in conjunction with exercises, drills or hard security challenges.

We can provide you with assessments and security plans including:

  • Audit (for both ships and facilities) of current MTSA/ISPS Code Plans
  • Code Plan – assessment and production
  • Maritime voyage threat assessments
  • Needs assessment and provision of defensive equipment
  • Penetration testing of ship security
  • Piracy Incidents Vessel Security Plans review or compilation to Coastguard requirements
  • Selection of on-board security staff

Corporate Security Program

NTS wants to ensure that employees and guests feel safe at a corporate facility by managing threats, facilitating procedures for guests entering/exiting the facilities, monitoring access control, and providing both physical and electronic security. NTS suggests open, continuous dialogue concerning security and NTS security personnel.

From time to time, corporations will receive inappropriate correspondence via letter, email/internet, phone call, text, unwanted visitor, and packages. NTS highly recommends training corporate staff on how to handle these kinds of materials. The training will ensure that all threatening materials go directly to NTS Corporate Headquarters to be analysed in collaboration with law enforcement. Once a threat level is established, NTS develops a strategy to manage the threat. In addition, NTS will create a crisis management plan to identify procedures, emergency supplies and emergency notification procedures.

Technical Counter Measures

Sweeps / Bug Detection

Investigators will conduct visual, electronic, and physical investigations of systems that may be affected by technical surveillance measures. If any security problems are found, investigators can use counter measures or gather evidence so that the company or individual can pursue legal action against those individuals involved in the technical security breach.

Our team will:

  • Conduct a spectral search for spatially radiating eavesdropping devices.
  • Examine all telephone instruments, ancillaries and, where appropriate, communications hubs and associated systems.
  • Examine wiring associated with the area under inspection to ensure that these have not been modified or exploited.
  • Test the electrical mains supply to ensure that no eavesdropping devices are operating over the electrical mains or are being powered by mains voltages.
  • Electronically search the fabric and furnishings of each office or area to detect and locate hidden capture equipment such as tape recorders or switch over devices
  • Optically search for video surveillance devices using laser refraction equipment and consider the possibility of optical/beam devices being operated from nearby properties.

To properly secure a single executive office for corporate or government clients we recommend at least six sweeps per year. These sweeps should be evenly spaced out on a quasi-random basis, including one annual comprehensive (three to seven day) sweep and an annual or quarterly comprehensive physical security audit. A full report with photographs, comments on physical/information security, access to IT network, overlook, and acoustics is provided.

Narcotics Search

The NTS team can search and detect minute traces of cocaine, opiates (e.g. heroin and morphine), cannabis (e.g. marijuana and hashish) and amphetamine-type stimulants (amphetamine, ecstasy and methamphetamine).

Our explosive detection search will utilize: the E.L.I.T.E.™ Model EL100 which is the only product sensitive to a broad range of explosives as well as inexpensive, reliable, rugged and simple enough to be distributed to every policeman, special forces team,

police and military vehicle for on-the-spot testing for trace explosives globally.
